How does cart goal rewards and other Shopify discounts combine?

Understanding Shopify Discounts

Shopify supports different types of discounts, called discount classes which include:
Product Discounts: Apply to specific products or collections.
Order Discounts: Apply to the total cart value.
Shipping Discounts: Reduce or eliminate shipping costs.

Discount Combination Rules

Discounts combine based on discount class: Each discount can be configured to combine with others within different discount classes. However, Shopify does not allow control over specific discounts within the same class—only how a discount interacts with all others of its class.
Only One Product Discount per Line Item: Even if "Combine with other product discounts" is enabled, only the best product discount will be applied per item.
Best Discount Wins: If multiple applicable discounts exist, Shopify will apply the best possible discount for the customer.

How Cart Goal Campaigns Work in CornerCart

In CornerCart, both free gifts and percentage-off discounts are applied as product discounts.
Due to one product discount per line item rule, if a percentage-off reward is part of a cart goal campaign, it will compete with any other product discount for a particular line item. Even if 'Combine with other product discounts' is enabled, only the best discount will be applied per line item.
Free gifts (100% off the price) in a cart goal campaign will take precedence over other product discounts for a line item since they provide the highest value.
If a Shopify coupon does not allow combination with other product discounts, only one product discount can be applied depending on which ever gives the best value to the buyer.

Best Practices for Combining Discounts

Enable Combine with Other Product Discounts: We recommend you set your existing discounts in Shopify to combine with other product discounts for free gifts using cart goal campaigns to work as expected. Since cart goal campaigns aim to improve (AoV), in most cases customers expect this to combine with other product discounts like BXGY.
Plan Discounts Carefully: Ensure that discounts do not conflict, especially when using product discounts.
Check Combination Settings: Configure Shopify discounts to allow stacking where necessary.
